Effects of Quarantine

The effects of quarantine range from lack of exercise, negative impact to your mental health, and lack of support.

Quarantine Struggles

Studies have shown that the COVID-19 pandemic has heightened negative psychological issues in people (Brooks et, al. 2020).

There are many practices that can be used to aid in helping to cope with the many difficulties that have arose from the pandemic. It is important to pinpoint each difficulty to begin to understand what techniques can be used to help cope with those struggles. From exercise, to particular mental health improvement practices such as meditation, there is hope for a better tomorrow.

Negative Psychological Issues of Quarantine

A study done by Faruk Bozdağ (2021), that was "performed on data collected from 96 women and 80 men aged 18–57" (Bozdağ, 2021), shows that 22 people viewed quarantine as imprisonment and among the participants, many had experienced symptoms of depression, along with boredom.

An additional study explains that the effects of quarantine and the pandemic, have a negative impact on children, and adolescents. Citing depression, anxiety, and hyperactivity among them (Marchi, Johansson, Sarkadi, and Warner, 2021).

Sleep Quality and Quarantine

Due to home quarantine, many people are experiencing major changes to their routine, which can negatively affect sleep quality and physical activity. Living with uncertainty, insecurity about your health, as well as worrying about the world situation and duration can produce a lot of stress.

In a study done by Altena et al. (2020), they discussed the relationship between physical activity and sleep quality. They reported that low levels of physical activity during home quarantine negatively affects sleep quality, which can cascade into other issues.

Sedentary Lifestyle

Due to COVID-19, home confinement was universally urged and mandatory in other countries. With this, individuals were unable to perform their usual amount of physical activity. Without being able to go to the gym regularly, many people were slowly adopting a sedentary lifestyle.

In the study done by Narici et al. (2020), it stated that a few days of sedentary lifestyle can “induce muscle loss, neuromuscular junction damage and fibre denervation, insulin resistance, decreased aerobic capacity, fat deposition and low-grade systemic inflammation” (Narici et al., 2020). With the duration of the COVID-19 quarantine, many individuals suffered from these effects.
